The yellowtail kingfish (Seriola Ialandi) is a strong pelagic fish(Meaning free swimming oceanic species; like tuna). The kingfish is given many other names such as kingie, king, kingfish and Nor Header. A juvenile Kingfish can be called a Rat,while a very big kingfish is called a hoodlum.

The kingfish has very distinctive coloration. It can be dark green or blue on the back of it’s body, white on the belly and the back and belly is seperated with a band of yellow . The dorsal fin is dark green or blue tinged with yellow. The tail is normally some sort of yellow.

Juvenile Kingfish range from the sizes of 1kg to 4kg. The bigger Kingfish can range from 15kg to 30kg. The maximum size of a Kingfish would be 60kg. The legal size for a Kingfish today in NSW is 60cm.

Smaller Kingfish are good eating but dryness normally occurs in bigger species. Note IN SOME AREAS KINGFISH ARE REGULARY INFESTED WITH PARASITES AND NORMALLY CAUSE THE FLESH TO TURN SOFT AND MILKY WHEN BEING COOKED. All Kingfish should be bleed and iced immediately after caught if you are intending to keep them. Kingfish make great sashimi.

Kingfish can be caught on live baits, fish carcass, squid, metal slug lures, deep divers and poppers. Catching Kingfish on fly today is extremely popular and can provide great excitement. The Kingfish strikes very savagely and will provide you with a great fight so remember your camera.

Kingfish can be caught from Shark Bay to Central Queensland . They can also be caught of various island of Australia.
